Bringing Back the Streetcar
The Modern Streetcar
Salt
Lake City and the Redevelopment Agency (RDA) have been studying
the feasibility of reintroducing streetcars into the City to
further establish walkable, transit-oriented development and
provide non-automobile circulation options for residents and
visitors. Across the country, modern streetcar projects have
rejuvenated neighborhoods and business districts, attracting
thousands of new residents and shoppers and billions in
investment dollars. The success of streetcars is rooted in the
commitment of the community and the excitement that it generates
among local residents, businesses, and property owners.

$26 Million Federal Grant
Awarded
On
October 20, 2010, the Sugar House Streetcar was awarded a $26 million
federal grant. The Sugar House streetcar will extend from the
Central Pointe TRAX station at 2100 South to 1050 East along
approximately 2300 South. The streetcar will make
a vital
east-west connection while encouraging economic growth along its
planned route. Project Partners include Salt Lake City,
the RDA, South Salt Lake City, and UTA.
“I am pleased to
announce that by securing the TIGER II grant, we have identified
a crucial piece of federal funding to take the Sugar House
Streetcar from vision to reality,” Mayor Becker said. “Our
community and local economy will benefit tremendously by the
rapid development of this core transit improvement and the jobs
the project quickly creates.” --Mayor Ralph Becker
