West Temple Gateway Project Area

Project Area Overview

In 1987, the RDA created the West Temple Gateway (WTG) Project Area, located within the boundaries of Main Street and 300 West, and 600 South and Fayette Avenue (990 South). The purpose of this project area is to encourage the development of service industries, support the Central Business District, and provide an attractive urban residential environment.

The RDA's contributions to this area include the 900 South TRAX Station, Jefferson and Washington Street Beautification projects, and the repaving of eight alleyways. The 900 South TRAX Station is the only light rail stop to be built in a neighborhood and upon its opening, increased access for the residents and local businesses.

RDA Updates

West Temple Gateway and Granary District Redevelopment Strategy

In 2010, the RDA hired the National Development Council (NDC) to create a Redevelopment Strategy for the West Temple Gateway (WTG) and Granary District (GD) RDA Project Areas. On June 7, 2011, the RDA Board of Directors approved the Redevelopment Strategy which is now available to the public (below). The documents contain a variety of graphic renderings and may take some time to download. Please email ashlie.taylor@slcgov.com if you have questions regarding these documents or accessing them.

The economic analysis, key recommendations, and Design Guidelines apply to the entire neighborhood covered by both Project Areas. Four of the five conceptual site designs and analysis were provided to assist with redevelopment of RDA-owned property in the West Temple Gateway Project Area (map). In addition, analysis and conceptual site designs were also included for the City-owned "Fleet Block" in the Granary District Project Area (map). See Property Approach, pg 26-35.

The Strategy consists of four documents:

Executive Summary (PDF) - A summary of the Strategy recommendations and findings.

Redevelopment Guide (PDF) - Market analysis, sample cities, & key Strategy Recommendations (last several pages).

Property Approach (PDF) - Impact of constraints, zoning analysis and recommendations, and Opportunity Site recommendations that include proposed density, use, and timeline, sample Proformas, sample site plan and design.

Design Guidelines (PDF) - Street/building design elements to improve quality, walkability, and safety.

West Temple Gateway Community Meeting and RDA Update

Summary of August 24 Community Meeting hosted by the RDA:

  • The WTG & GD Redevelopment Strategy is complete and available online (above).

  • In WTG, the RDA anticipates two new redevelopment projects in the next six months. These are for two smaller properties around the 900 South TRAX station. Visit our Requests for Proposals page here for more information.

  • Those in attendance at the meeting selected four individuals from the community to represent them on the selection committees that will review RDA development proposals in WTG. Thank your to those individuals for volunteering. It is expected that the selection committees will convene within the next six months.

  • Representatives from the Granary District community introduced their efforts and invited those interested neighbors to join the action by supporting Granary District events. Learn more about the Granary District neighborhood branding effort here.

Thank you to our great hosts at Miss Billie's Kids Kampus!
