Central
Business District Project Area
Project
Area Overview
The Central Business District
(CBD) serves as the RDA’s most active project area. Established in May 1982, the CBD Project Area reflects
the Salt Lake City Master Plan's call for strengthening the city’s tax base through economic development and growth.
These efforts should provide for new commercial and housing development, as well as rehabilitation of existing downtown buildings. The CBD Project Area Plan also recommends installation of public
improvements, including parking and public right-of-way
enhancements. Originally, the CBD Project Area was due to expire in 2008; however, the
RDA’s
Taxing Entities and Board of Directors acknowledged the importance of extending the CBD Project Area to the year 2040 so the
RDA could continue to provide funding for downtown improvements. The
RDA's Taxing Entity Committee approved the project area extension in 2004.
With the considerable amount of construction activity changing the
downtown, most markedly the new
City Creek
Project, the RDA continues to take an active role in
downtown projects of different scales and characters.
