Central Business District

The Central Business District Project Area was created in phases beginning in 1969 and will sunset in 2008 for the collection of tax increment for active redevelopment.  The RDA will continue to collect tax increment through 2015, but the tax increment collected from 2009 to 2015 can only be used to fund debt service for specific projects identified in the Utah Neighborhood Development Act.   The CBD Project Area includes a total of 262 acres of privately owned property, excluding streets (see attached map).  The RDA collects tax increment from 100 acres of the project area, but until 2008 can invest the tax increment in the entire project area.  The tax increment collection area is also shown on the attached map.

The project area is the financial and cultural center for the Intermountain West.  The project area was originally set up to encourage redevelopment around the city’s new convention center, the Salt Palace.  The project area was later expanded adding most, but not all of the other blocks in the Central Business District from North Temple to 400 South and from 200 East to 400 West.  The project area is jagged at the edges, including the Salt Lake City Library block as an extension on the far eastern edge; the Hotel Utah as the only portion of the L.D.S. Temple Blocks; the Hilton Hotel as an extension below Fourth South on the south; and excluding the New Yorker/Federal Courts block abutting Main Street and the Alta Club and Federal Building blocks abutting State Street.

The area includes portions of all of the downtown zoning districts. click here
